Today, children grow up as a matter of course in a world shaped by digital media – smartphones, tablets and television are part of their everyday lives. Early media education aims to prepare children for a competent, critical and moderate use of media – not through the earliest and heaviest possible media consumption, but by fostering media literacy: understanding media, putting them into critical perspective, using them creatively and actively, and finding a healthy balance. At the same time, early media education stresses the indispensable importance of real, sensory, analogue experiences, which form the foundation especially in early childhood. This course explains what media education and media literacy are, how media use and development are connected, how media can be used in moderation and with purpose in the Kita, how active and creative media work succeeds, what risks and child protection issues there are, what part role modelling and an analogue balance play, and how to work together with parents.
