Many day-care centres (Kitas) are culturally and linguistically diverse today: children and families bring different backgrounds, cultures, languages, religions and ways of life. This cultural and linguistic diversity is both an enrichment and a task: it requires intercultural competence – an open, appreciative, culturally sensitive stance – and good handling of multilingualism (as a resource, not a deficit). Intercultural education aims to value and live diversity, to meet all children and families with openness and respect, and to prepare all children for a life in a diverse world. This course covers a basic understanding of cultural diversity, intercultural competence and stance, dealing with multilingualism, cultural sensitivity and reducing prejudice, dealing with migration and arrival, intercultural cooperation with parents, making diversity visible and living it in everyday life, and dealing with cultural differences.

Course objectives:

  • understand the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity
  • develop intercultural competence and an appreciative stance
  • understand and support multilingualism as a resource
  • act in a culturally sensitive way and reduce prejudice
  • deal sensitively with migration, flight and arrival
  • work with parents in an intercultural way; live diversity in everyday life
  • deal constructively with cultural differences
