Language is the foundation of education, social participation and educational equity. Crucial foundations for this are laid in the day-care centre. The modern approach is everyday-integrated language education: language is stimulated and supported not in separate ‘support sessions’ but in ordinary day-care centre life – during play, meals, getting dressed, in conversation. This course shows how children acquire language, how the early years practitioner becomes a language role model and dialogue partner, how language-rich everyday situations can be used, what role literacy and reading aloud play, how multilingualism is valued, and how language education is observed and shaped together with parents.
