This course conveys the attitude and knowledge of palliative care: quality of life and dignity instead of cure, symptom control (pain, breathlessness and others), empathetic communication, recognising and accompanying the dying phase, spiritual and psychosocial support, ethical questions at the end of life and supporting relatives and the bereaved – as well as self-care for those who provide support.

Course objectives:

  • Understand the attitude and goals of palliative care (quality of life, dignity)
  • Relieve symptoms (pain, breathlessness, nausea, restlessness, dry mouth)
  • Communicate empathetically and honestly at the end of life
  • Recognise the dying phase and accompany it with dignity
  • Classify ethical questions at the end of life (advance directive/Patientenverfügung, goal of treatment)
  • Support relatives and the bereaved – and take care of your own self-care

Self-study without supervision, assignments or assessment of learning progress by instructors; the voluntary self-reflection is for your own orientation only. Your confirmation of participation becomes available once you have marked all modules as done yourself.
