Children are different – in their abilities, needs, backgrounds and circumstances. Inclusion means seeing this diversity as normal and as an enrichment, and enabling every child – with or without a disability, whatever their background and whatever their individual characteristics – to take full part and to belong. Inclusion is a human right (UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, UN CRPD) and a valuable pedagogical concern: it does not aim to adapt the child to the group, but to shape the group and the environment so that every child can belong and take part. This course provides a basic understanding of inclusion, the inclusive stance, the right to participation, the view of diversity as an enrichment, the identification and removal of barriers, individual support and compensation for disadvantage, the inclusive shaping of everyday life, cooperation within the team and with specialist services and parents, and how to deal with the challenges of inclusion.
