From the very beginning, children have a body to discover and a right to a relaxed, healthy relationship with it – and a right to protection from transgressions. A body-positive, age-appropriate approach to sexuality education supports the child's normal, healthy physical and psychosexual development while also strengthening their boundaries and right to self-determination. A protection concept protects children from sexual transgressions – by adults and among children. The two belong closely together: children who know their bodies, notice their boundaries and are allowed to say ‘no’ are better protected. This course provides a basic understanding of children's psychosexual development, a body-positive, age-appropriate educational stance, the importance of boundaries and self-determination, how to handle children's curiosity (e.g. ‘doctor games’) with clear rules, and an effective protection concept against transgressions – including how to deal with suspicion and how to work together in child protection.

Course objectives:

  • gain a basic understanding of children's psychosexual development
  • develop a body-positive, age-appropriate, professional stance
  • strengthen children in setting boundaries, saying no and self-determination (prevention)
  • respond appropriately and with clear rules to children's curiosity (e.g. ‘doctor games’)
  • understand a protection concept and its components
  • recognise and distinguish sexual transgressions (by adults and among children)
  • act appropriately when there is a suspicion; work together with parents and within child protection
