Medicines help – and can cause serious harm when errors occur. In 12 modules, this course (approx. 12 teaching units of 45 minutes each) makes handling medicines safe: from responsibility (prescribing responsibility and responsibility for implementation, delegation) and the ‘rights’ of medication administration as a safety framework, routes of administration, safely preparing (dispensing) medication, observing effects, side effects and interactions, handling controlled drugs and the special features of drug therapy in older age (polypharmacy, PRISCUS) to administration via tube, PRN medication, storage/disposal and a constructive error culture. Each module offers learning objectives, well-founded learning text, an in-depth section, a case study and a transfer-to-practice exercise. At the end: self-reflection, checklists and confirmation of participation. The course does not replace a medical prescription or pharmaceutical advice.

Course objectives:

  • Understand responsibility and delegation in medication management
  • Apply the ‘rights’ of medication administration safely and avoid mix-ups
  • Handle routes of administration correctly (including tubes)
  • Observe effects, side effects and interactions
  • Know the special features of drug therapy in older age
  • Avoid, report and document medication errors

Self-study without supervision, assignments or assessment of learning progress by instructors; the voluntary self-reflection is for your own orientation only. Your confirmation of participation becomes available once you have marked all modules as done yourself.

Scope: 12 modules of about 45 minutes each (approx. 12 teaching units of 45 minutes each, about 9 hours).
